GDP grew by 5.3% yoy in the first quarter. GDP growth in the first quarter was driven by a combination of factors. Fast growth of real exports (at 19.0% yoy) and real private final consumption (at 12.7% yoy ) was largely offset by even faster growth of real imports (39.3% yoy).
Over the last two weeks the price for cereals on international markets have fallen significantly. In addition recently there are observed significant jumps in prices for grain. The first reason for these fluctuations is the dependence of prices for grains and oilseeds from the raw oil prices, because such correlation affects the profitability of biofuel production.
Between June 23 and 24 Senior Research Fellow of the Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting (IER) Dmytro Naumenko visited the Final Project Event of the EU funded Project “Analysis for ENPI countries on Social and Economic Benefits of Enhanced Environmental Protection” for Eastern ENPI Partner countries.
Because of the slowing development of world economy there is a decrease in prices for raw materials on international markets, namely of raw oil, grains and oilseeds. A similar situation has developed on exchanges in Chicago and Paris. Ukraine will not be able to avoid this trend.

Recently the President of Ukraine signed the Law on introduction of export duties on cereals. From July 1, the law comes into force, which introduce 9% export duty on wheat, 12% duty on corn and 14% duty on barley and will operate until 31 December 2011.
Europe is not in a hurry to let the Ukrainian agricultural products on its markets. However this does not mean that Kyiv must hurry in grain OPEC, which Moscow offers to create. The head of the German-Ukrainian Policy Dialogue Heinz Strubenhoff in an interview àùê Deutsche Welle assessed Ukraine's capabilities as a supplier of grain to European and world markets.
