  Medium-sized business in Ukraine: Terra incognita or "hidden" Mittelstand

  IER’s bring to your attention the new "Medium-Sized Business Survey 2023", which is made possible through the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. In preparing this study, IER’s goal was to raise awareness among stakeholders in Ukraine and abroad about the state, needs and prospects of medium-sized business development in Ukraine as a key bearer of liberal values and an important driving force for pro-European reforms in Ukraine. In our opinion, one of the key needs for the development of this important sector of Ukrainian business and social class is to widely inform about medium-sized businesses in Ukraine as a reliable partner and stakeholder of pro-European reforms to accelerate Ukraine's movement towards the European Union.

  Annual Business Climate Assessment 2016: National and Regional Dimensions

  “Low demand” ranked first among the barriers for growth of Ukrainian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in 2016. This barrier replaced the “unfavorable political situation” – the number one barrier in 2015. In 2016, political instability moved down to the second place in the list of the barriers for SMEs.

  What Is the Cost of Operating a Business in Ukraine?

  In 2016, the costs attributed to operating a business in Ukraine have been lower than in a respective index in 2015. In particular, during the past year, Ukrainians spent on average UAH 27,412 for the purposes of compliance with the effective regulatory requirements. This amount is UAH 2,349 lower than in 2015, which is primarily the result of the reduction of the costs incurred in connection with audits of businesses.

  Low demand and political instability top the list of obstacles for business in Ukraine

  Low demand and unfavorable political situation are the major obstacles for the development of industrial enterprises in Ukraine as of early 2015. This was demonstrated by the results of the quarterly business survey in which Ukrainian businesses assessed the 4th quarter of 2014. The survey was conducted by the Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting and presented in the special “Business Climate and Reforms –Ukrainian Business Expectations in 2015” report.
